Psychedelic Backgrounds

After a long break I wrote a new tutorial for Paint Shop Pro 8. Although the screenshots are in German (sorry - PSP allows only one language version of the same software version on one system) it should be easy to follow the tutorial.

We start with a new graphic of the size of a common computer screen: 1024 Px wide and 768 Px high, resolution 75 dpi, background white.
First we need the flood fill tool flood fill. With the colour palette, we choose gradient (radial):

colour settings

After applying the gradient, our graphic should look like this:

Step 1

Now we use the menu "Effects/Distortion/Polar coordinates". We need the following settings:

Polar coordinates

This results in the following graphic:

Step 2

Now we use the magic wand to select the surrounding areas and fill them with our gradient:

Step 3

The next effect is "Effects/Geometric effects/circle" and does the following:

Step 4

The next step again is to select the surrounding area again and fill it with the gradient:

Step 5

The graphic doesn't look bad at this stage, but the major effect is still to come.

With the help of the "Sunburst" effect we want to produce some depth. Please click "Effect/Lighting effects/Sunburst" and enter the following settings:

Sunburst settings

Drag the little cross on the left side of the window until the effect looks alright for you.

Click OK:

Step 6

As the last step we want to apply an outer bevel effect to the inner part of the graphic. Type CTRL+SHIFT+i to invert the selection. After that, click "Effects/3D effects/Outer Bevel" and apply the following settings:

Outer Bevel Settings

This will result in the following picture:

Step 7

TIP: Try other settings for gradients, blurring filters and layer visibility for other effects.
