Alb's Tutorials / Paint Shop Pro Tutorials / Inner and Outer Bevel Part 2

  Bevelling
part 2
This is the second part of my bevelling tutorial. To see the first half of it please come this way.

For the next step we need a new graphic. Again it should be 300 p to 150 p white on white, resolution 150 dpi.
Activate the flood fill tool again and set the color to Purple-blue-orange.

filling color

Fill the whole new graphic by clicking right in the middle of it.

second graphic

Click "Image"/"Effects"/"Buttonize" and use the settings Height 10, Width 10, Opacity 58, Transparent Edge.

Buttonize

Now it already looks like a nice button:

button background

Go back to the graphic containing the text (the selection should still be active: you can see it by the "marching ants" around it) and copy it by clicking "Edit"/"Copy".

Now click on the header of the button graphic and paste the text into it by clicking "Edit"/"Paste as"/"new layer".

paste as new layer

Your graphic should look like this after that:

background and text

For the next step we need to blank the background out so go to the layer window (if you can't see it you can turn it on by clicking on the toggle button layer toggle in the upper tool bar) and turn visibility for the background layer off.

layer window

Now we only see the text and probably a checkered background.

text with blanked out background

Next we need the "Magic Wand" magic wand tool to select the area around the text. Click the tool, then click the area around the text. You'll see the ants marching around the text again, leaving a nice border to the text. To select the blank area on the inside of the letters press the "shift" key and click in the middle of the areas you want to select. You'll notice that the pointing device changed its appearance and added a "+". Thus you are able to add selections to what you already selected before. Neat, isn't it?

magic wand selection

Now click "Selections"/"Invert" to select the text itself.

invert selection

We're nearly there. Only three more steps to go!

Now we need the background layer again: Go to the layer window again and turn visibility for the background layer on again.

turn visibility of the background layer on

To be able to use the next bevel effect we have to merge the two layers into one. Click at "Layers"/"Merge"/"Flatten". (You can open the layer window to see that there's only the background layer left.)

Merge layers

The last step: Click "Image"/"Effects"/"Outer Bevel" and select "Angled" from the upper middle dropdown menu.

Outer Bevel Window

Apply the effect by clicking "OK" and press CTRL+D to get rid of the selection.

the finished graphic

That's it. Long way 'til we got here but isn't it worth it?.
