![]() Now that we have used pre-made masks how about making some masks on your own? There are many pictures you can use as masks. The best usable masks are the black and white, though. I want to show you how to make your own custom masks in only a few steps. Open a new picture("File"/"New", 100x100 pixels, background black, foreground white, resolution 72 p/inch. ![]() Now activate the selection tool, open the tools tab and change the setting to ellipse. To play around with this setting, you might like to try the star shape, arrow or whichever shape you like. ![]() Now draw a selection, leaving a distance to the border of the graphic. ![]() Choose "selection"/"modify"/"feather". ![]() Set number of pixels to 30. ![]() The selection expands and possibly hits the border. That's not to worry. You may later try different settings or cut the graphic with the crop tool. ![]() Switch to the flood fill tool and adjust the settings on the tools window. Make sure you have foreground color set to white, fill style to solid color, blend mode to lighten, paper texture to none and opacity to 100. ![]() Flood fill the selection. You will see that the white color feathers out towards the borders of the selection. ![]() The last step is to deactivate the selection by using the STRG+D hotkey. Save the graphic as jpg file. That's it. Your new mask is ready to go. Your assignment is to use any shape from a selection to make a mask file and mail me the file. Below you can see some examples of how custom masks could look like. The arrow and the star mask were made using different settings of the selection tool. ![]()
