This is the second part of my masks tutorial.
While last time we were only blending parts of a picture out, we
want to blend one picture into another in this tutorial.
Please right-click the three graphics below and choose "save as"
to download them to your harddisk.

Our goal is to have the animals hover over Stonehenge. So as first
step we open all three images in Paintshop Pro.

Then we activate file2.jpg by clicking on it, select the whole picture
by pressing CTRL+A, and copy it by pressing CTRL+C. You can use
the edit/select all and edit/copy menu instead, of course. Now activate
file1.jpg and click menu "edit"/"paste"/"paste as new layer". The
picture below shows that file1.jpg looks just like file2.jpg at
the moment. But if you open the layer winder you'll find a new layer
(layer 1). Stonehenge is hidden under the animals.

The next step is a very important one: In the layer window, click
at the glasses symbol next to the background layer. It should have
a red cross over it now. The effect is that any changes you make
to the other layer won't affect Stonehenge. The layer window will
look like this:

You can check whether the background has vanished by clicking on
the glasses symbol for layer 1 as well. You'll get an empty frame
with the background you chose on the background color tab on the
right edge of your Paintshop Pro window. Please turn visibility
for layer 1 on again by clicking on the glasses symbol again.
Now we come to a point we know from the last tutorial. To apply
the mask to the animals click on "masks"/"new"/"from file".

Open the dropdown menu and choose "mask.jpg". Leave the option "source
luminance" activated and the "invert mask data" checkmark unchecked.
Click "ok".

The picture should look like this:

Now comes the merging part: Open the layer window again and turn
visibility for the background layer on by clicking on its glasses
symbol again.

If you want to merge all layers into one you can click "layers"/"merge
all (flatten)" to have everything in a single layer. That's it.
In the third and last part
of my masks tutorials you will learn how to create your own masks.
