Metal Letters 2

This time I want to show you another metallic effect, using the Jama3D filter from http://www.redfieldplugins.com/. It's freeware so all you have to do is download and install it to your plugins folder.

A short how-to: Download the Jama3D filter from Redfield and copy it somewhere to your harddrive. Then double-click it to start the installation process and follow the instructions. The plugin directory is usually c:\program files\Jasc\Paint Shop Pro\Plugins or similar. After re-starting Paint Shop Pro you should be able to see the new filter under "Effects/Plug-in Filters/Redfield". If you can't see it open "File/Preferences/File Locations". Open the Plug-in tab and check whether the plugins folder has been selected. If not add it, close the window, restart PSP and see whether the plugin shows up.

Since I made a few screenshots please be patient while the pics load.

If you have questions please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.

Let's go! :))

Start a new graphic with 250px width, 70px height, 72dpi resolution and background colour white.

Activate the text tool and click inside the new graphic. Adjust the settings as they appear in the picture below.
text editor

To achieve the orange colour set the fill colour setting to plain (click triangle and choose the left setting), click on the colour field (looking orange on my pic) and enter "#FF8000" into the HTML colour field at the bottom of the colour window (next pic)

When you set everything the way described above, click "ok". The graphic should then look like this:

Next go to the Layer palette (if you can't find it on the screen click the symbol with the red and light blue squares above the Paint Shop Pro working area). Right-click the line saying "Floating selection" and choose "Promote to layer". This causes the text to stand on its own layer which you can see by opening the Layer palette again.

Next we need the Jama3D filter. Make sure you have activated the layer with the text on it (check with the layer palette and click on the "Promoted Selection" layer) and go to "Effects/Plug-in Filters/Redfield/Jama3D".
A new window opens, and you have to adjust the following settings: Preset "Embossed Wrapper", "G-Shading: 10/10". To change the G-shading setting drag the knob in the lower right corner (pic below).

Click ok. The graphic has changed and shows that the plain orange has been "rubbed in" with dark streaks.

Next click "Effects/3d effects/Inner Bevel" and use the preset "round". The window looks like this:
Inner Bevel

The last step is a drop shadow. For this go to "Effects/3d effects/drop shadow" and adjust the settings as seen below:

That gives the graphic a more natural look. Combined with the dark streaks from the Jama3D filter we gave the graphic a metallic and slightly corroded look:

This finishes my second metallic effect tutorial.
