Back and forth - Indentations

This is my third tutorial using PSP7. I found out about a neat effect using the inner bevel filter. Since I made quite a few screenshots again please be patient while the pics load.

You'll need a Clipart font called Nina's Animals for this tutorial. The zipped file can be downloaded here.Save it to your harddisk, unzip it and copy it to your Windows/Fonts directory.

If you have questions please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.

But now let's go! :))

Open a new picture("File"/"New", 150x150 pixels, background white, resolution 72 p/inch.

new image

colour tab Select the flood fill tool flood fill tool. Set foreground colour to a light blue and background colour to white (see example). Then set the fill style to solid and foreground colour.
Now click inside the new graphic to fill it with the blue colour.

Next click on Effects/Texture Effects/Texture. Select the setting "Rug" and click ok. Texture menu

Texture setting

Right now, your graphic should look like this:
rug

Layer Palette For the next step, go to the layer palette (if it's not active click on the icon in the upper icon row (the red/blue squares). Click right on the background and duplicate it (just for safety reasons).
Now you have a second layer on which we will go on with editing:
layer palette 2

Next we want to add some "text". Click at the text tool tool and click in the center of the graphic.
Use the following settings: Font name Nina's Animals, Size 48 bold, Styles: stroke none, fill solid dark blue, texture none, create as Floating.
Now type a "r" which comes up as a little bunny. (screenshot below)

text window

Hit ok to create the text. Then use the keys STRG+SHIFT+i twice to make the outer bevel effect available (leave that step out and you'll see lateron what I mean)

For later use, we need to duplicate the bunny selection. Use CTRL+C and CTRL+L to copy the selection and paste as new layer. Now click on "Floating Selection" because we still have to work on it. The layer palette will look like this:

Use the keys CTRL+H to open the feather window and set it to 3. Hit OK.

colour tab 2white shadeActivate the flood fill tool again and set the foreground colour to white.
Click inside the selection two to four times and you will see the following effect:

outer bevel
And now we get to that "back" part I mentioned in the title. Click on Effects/3d effects/outer bevel (that's what we needed the double inverting of the selection for). Set it to "Frame":

Frame

frameApply it a second time and then remove the "marching ants" from the selection by using the keys CTRL+D. The result of this last step looks like this (right).

This could be the end of the tutorial.

But I called the tutorial "Back and Forth" so there's a little trick you can use to get a second version of your graphic to use for animated buttons.
Look at this:

bunny in frontIf you don't use the "Frame" setting for the outer bevel but the "Round" setting your bunny looks like it would stand out!

This finishes the "Back and Forth" Tutorial.

This finishes the "Back and Forth" Tutorial.
