Tutorials / Masks Part 1
![]() A great feature of Paintshop Pro is the mask. With its help you are able to merge one graphic into another, blend them into other pictures and so on. This first part of the tutorial shows how a mask is applied. Please right-click the two pictures below and choose "save as" to try it yourself on your computer at home. ![]() First open both files in Paintshop Pro. I did the pics on version 6 but it should work on version 5 as well. Then click "masks"/"New"/"From Image". ![]() In the window that opens set the option to "source luminance" and leave the "invert mask data" checkmark unchecked. From the dropdown menu choose "mask.jpg" and click "ok". ![]() Now the chimp should look like this: ![]() The grey and white background shows that there's no colour set for background. If you open the layer window you'll find a new little sign next to your layer name indicating a mask is enabled. ![]() You can view the mask itself by clicking "masks"/"view mask". ![]() The mask will show as a light red where it covers the picture below. ![]() You can turn mask view off by clicking "masks"/"view mask" again. This was the very basic introduction to masks. Your assignment will be to copy the chimp.jpg and mask.jpg, apply the mask, save the chimp.jpg again and send it to me by e-mail. Masks are a wonderful tool when you work with layers so this will be the topic of the second tutorial.
